It is also commonly used as a heavy-duty cleaning agent, used to clean process equipment, tanks, pipes and containers where it acts as a strong degreaser, descaler and pH adjuster. It is also found in a majority of commercial drain and professional grade oven cleaners.

Other uses include laundering and bleaching, metal cleaning and processing, electroplating, as an effluent treatment and as a laboratory reagent.
